Background on backgrounds

A behind the curtain, this week, on the creation of a free download of backgrounds for virtual meetings. Why create them?

  • I wanted people to have a background that was ambient and abstract but not dizzying or distracting to them or others in the meeting.

  • I also wanted people to have a way to keep what was behind them private and feel comfy and supported with these designs.

  • Because I find the backgrounds' out there really distracting;

- With a blurred background, my mind works hard to imagine what's going on behind them in high definition. So my concentration is off.

- If it's a background of a classy loft space or high rise apartment, I look behind the meeting subject to see if the furniture is in the right proportion and perspective relative to the speaker.

- And if it's stars, flowers, or outer space, I think...can't we do better here?

As I tested the backgrounds out within Zoom, I found that softer tones worked better than stronger colours. Somehow there was less distortion when I moved my hands around working with softer tones.

You can download them to use here.

Till next time,
